Diff•ri•ent – The Process

By ryanapsmith from MC25A Blog. Published on Dec 24, 2009.

Niels Diffrient in his Ted Talk on Changing the way we sit gave me an idea for a promotional landing page for a new product. The first step was to sketch the draft layout of the page… The next step was to get everything in photoshop, once I figured out what menu items I wanted [...]

Tabulous!

By ryanapsmith from MC25A Blog. Published on Feb 13, 2009.

Okay, so the titles are probably getting cornier and cornier with each new post, but I couldn’t help this one. As much as I’d like to think that I’ve covered most of what CSS has to offer, I was wading in unfamiliar waters with the latest discussion in class on the “sliding doors” technique for [...]

MC25B Week 1

By Jodene (noreply@blogger.com) from YOU HAVE ENTERED. Published on Feb 13, 2009.

Hi i'm back this semester to ramble about what I did in multimedia class

Monday

This week we picked up where we left off, that is HTML and CSS. The focus however was more on CSS.We learnt a very useful technique called the sliding door technique. More information about the technique and what is involved can be found here. In addition to that learning about it we actually had to do an example where we made a fairly simple tabbed navigation utilizing the technique.

Wednesday

For this class we had a mini-field trip...to the assembly hall hall. We were working with an actual green screen that would be used for The University of the West Indies Research Day. It was a lot of fun however, in all things there are vital lessons to be learnt, in this instance i learnt that we should always prepare before hand because something will always go wrong. In our case the firewire port on the camera was shot, fortunately we were able to get a black box (i flat out forgot what it was called) which enabled to to capture the images. I went back on the final day of research day (why is it called research day btw when it's more than one day :S) and tested the program out it worked pretty well. I'm feeling so proud of me and what i'm learning now

Roy Forrester – Weather Guy

By ryanapsmith from MC25A Blog. Published on Feb 01, 2009.

What does the weather have to do with multimedia? As a kid growing up, I wouldn’t have ever made the correlation, but there was something about Roy Forrester, forecaster for Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation, standing in front of clouds, sun, and aerial shots of Jamaica that always fascinated me. How’d he do it? The answer was [...]

Design will save the world

By ryanapsmith from MC25A Blog. Published on Dec 01, 2008.

In our very first class, we were asked to create a signthat best describes us, by using our names and an accompanying tag line. Immediately I thought of a sentiment I heard once, “Design will save the world”. Granted, when I first heard it, it was in Russian. But it has stuck with me ever [...]

[Week 1] September 3, 2008 I waited two years to do this course and it’s finally here! Multimedia is a big part of me and I know I’m destined to do it as a part of my career. In the first class we basically got an overview of the entire course and got to know [...]

Find your inner happinCSS

By ryanapsmith from MC25A Blog. Published on Nov 20, 2008.

So the spelling is a little bit off, but you get the general idea. CSS, or Cascading Style Sheets, are used by designers to paint the uninteresting canvas that is their HTML page with bright colors and images, and to aid in their display and positioning on user screens, as well as for printing and [...]

News today, for a better tomorrow

A site I’ve always liked to visit for inspiration and to get the very latest on what’s happening in the design world is News Today, also known as QBN. Imitation is the best form of flattery, and it’s a great place to get cool ideas for that next project you’re working on. It should come [...]

It’s how the Internet says Good Morning. And the language is HTML. Hyper Text Markup Language has long been the lingua franca for the World Wide Web, helping others, whether, man or machine, who do not speak the same language, to achieve shared meaning through the use of one standard set of symbols and syntax. WEEK 4

Monday

Today was our second photography class, we got our second assignment where were instructed to take pictures that tells a story about us. We learnt about the various shots, we learnt about the micro setting which is used for taking pictures of really small objects, we learnt about the shots that can be used such as silhouette, this is basically taking a profile shot of a person, when the subjecct is behind the light and in front of the camera. Birds eye view is when a shot is taken from way above and the images so the images look smaller. Worms eye view is the opposite, that is when an image is taken from below, when this is done the subject looks much larger.

Wednesday

This week we worked on photoshop some more, this week we learnt about layers. Layers are necessary because it makes it easier to work with. Layers also help persons correct major errors. We also learnt how to merge and lock layers.
when merging layers we learnt that you have the option to merge down, this is when the all the images from the one selected downwards and selected and turned into one layer.
merging selected merges only the messages that were selected, that could be every other layer. or the first three or last three.
Merge visible merges all images with the eye icon visible.

Grouping

grouping helps when you are using a lot of layers, the designer groups several layers he now has the option when blending.
Blending
Blending modes gives the designer flexibility, the designer now gets different looks and feels.

The Great Business Idea

By ryanapsmith from MC25A Blog. Published on Oct 22, 2008.

There are three things you need to get a great business plan off the ground. Presentation, presentation, and presentation. Even the cheesiest of ideas, when presented well, can stir the response you need to get going. In the creation of a successful business plan, it’s important to convey your ideas as clearly as possible, and [...]

Why I failed Art in High School

By ryanapsmith from MC25A Blog. Published on Oct 02, 2008.

If my Art teacher were dead, she’d be turning in her grave upon hearing what I do for a living, and study now. Ms. Lynch is still alive, however, and one day I’ll have a sit down with her, perhaps over a drink, and ask why she failed me three years in a row in [...]

MC25A Week 3

By Jodene (noreply@blogger.com) from YOU HAVE ENTERED. Published on Dec 01, 2008.

Monday

Today we started a new module. Digital photography, or tutor Mr. Damien Baddy, we spent the first part of the class going over the basics of photography. We learnt about shadows, the rule of thirds (more information can be found here http://digital-photography-school.com/blog/rule-of-thirds/). We also learnt that a good photographer never takes a proper photo once. We also compared potrait and landscape shots. We went out and took photographs as well and came back and showed everyone.

Wednesday

OK so as promised i'm gonna show u what i did for my assignment, i did a photoshop tutorial and this is the end result, i chose to use brushes to make a wallpaper. For today's class we went over what we did in the previous class. In addition we got familiar with some photoshop tools such as the brush tool, the marquee tool which is used for selecting, pens, layers and layer masks and paint buckets.
We also compared Vector and Raster images. Vector images/shapes can be resized infinitely without distorting their shape, eg. fonts, whilst Raster images can only be resized to a certain extent.

MC25A Week 2

By Jodene (noreply@blogger.com) from YOU HAVE ENTERED. Published on Sep 20, 2008.

Monday

Yeah so this week the real work began, and in all honesty everything we did paled in comparison to the class exercise we were required to do. we learnt about elements of design and how they can be applied in our own designs, we learnt about things such as colour, contrast, space. etc... after class i found an interesting website that discusses the same topic, the url is:
http://www.digital-web.com/articles/elements_of_design/.
The thing that stood out for me in this class, (except for the fact that i was forced to draw) was the fact that simple things such as lines and shapes have a profound effect on your design. Shapes and lines can emphasize your point, or attract to a particular item. Contrary to my to what i believed text also plays an integral part in the design process, text contributes to the visual appeal of you work. At the end of the class we received our first graded assignment, i'll post that along with the "drawings" i did ASAP

Wednesday

Today we had a fun class, we were focusing on photo manipulation, therefore we were formally introduced to Mr. Photoshop, who is one of the most popular men in that particular field. We were taught the basics such as, selecting, moving and resizing images. I learnt a really neat trick to undo most not all ( i learnt the hard way) of your work done without a bag of clicking or pressing a bunch of keys, that is the history toolbar where you simply click up and your work is undone. We also played around with the brushes {i made grass :)}, the pen tools and we also did a little blending, we were told to do a collage and i did one with the brushes and with my siblings. Our lecturer Mr. Bain also allowed to to familiarize ourselves with photoshop and as a result i found out that photoshop wasn't as intimidating as i thought it was.
